Relax by Growing a Garden

Written by admin on April 30, 2008 – 7:36 am -

Most people don’t see gardening as a form of relaxation but it is.  It also boosts your self confidence and allows you to enjoy your fruits and vegetables that come from your garden. Gardening is a great hobby and you can grow particular foods throughout the year.

When you garden, it gets you out of the house.  Breathing in the fresh air instead of the circulated air in a building or your home is healthier.  Sometimes if you don’t get enough fresh air during the day you can become depressed, feel run down and sometimes unhealthy. Being outside allows your body to build a stronger immune system and get enough sunlight, which is very important for a healthy body. Working the soil, pulling weeds or picking fruits and vegetables that are done can give you time away from the television, phone or people so you can sort out your problems in your mind and get a more positive approach to your problems.

It takes planning, care and an unlimited amount of your time to grow a garden successfully.  You can grow anything and everything that you need and want in your garden.  Gardens used to be grown in order to provide for the family all year long.  Now gardens are mainly grown for pleasure, although some people do still grow a garden to tend to their garden.  When you plant, care and pick your own vegetables and fruit it builds your self confidence up and gives you the self esteem that you need and deserve.  We all need this kind of boost but we usually don’t get it.  The acknowledgement that people usually get is when nothing bad is said.  There are several things you can grow in a garden; Corn, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Squash, Beets, Potatoes, Beans, Herbs, flowers and more.  These are all healthy foods and can promote a healthy lifestyle.

Gardening can be done indoors for a great way to garden.  Planting seeds or plants in planters on a sun porch or in a green house will give you the fruits and vegetables that you want all year around.  Growing tomatoes all year around as well as corn and carrots are easy to do and are low maintenance.  Gardening indoors can lift your spirits when you would normally feel gloomy or depressed with snow on the ground or freezing temperatures outside.  You can feel good while you watch your food grow each and every day.

When you plant your own foods you may pay more attention to what goes into your food and become more aware of what is fattening and unhealthy for you.  You may experiment with new recipes and become a creative cook.  Gardening may have the same affect on your child as well.  Teaching better eating habits and being more aware of what goes into preparing our foods is great for everyone to know.  If you are feeling sad, burdened or depressed, think about all the things you can grow in your garden and how beautiful things look as they grow. You will be pleasantly surprised as you see what you can do by yourself for your family.

Besides gardening other ways to relax include learning relaxation techniques for stress like autogenic relaxation techniques.

How To Lay A Concrete Path

Written by admin on April 22, 2008 – 12:08 pm -

Here you will find all the tips, tricks and techniques of laying a concrete path. Primarily before laying out a concrete path, one would require materials such as pre-mixed concrete, formwork, nails, screws, and reinforcing mesh and mesh chair supports. The tools required would be hammers, shovel, tape to measure, wheelbarrow, float, concrete edger or jointer and string line. See that this material is kept away from children and always wear safety equipment while working, also seek any prior permission if the concrete layout needs permission prior to starting. The steps to be followed while laying out a concrete are mentioned below.

Preparing the site
Decide the area in which you are planning to lay out the concrete path. If the path is near a lawn area it would be preferable if the height of the concrete is same as the lawn. This not only looks better but is also easier to cut off the edges. Three inches of concrete would be sufficient to give strength to the path. While pouring the concrete decide on the curve of the area, whether it would be straight or curved and pour the concrete accordingly. One can use wood stakes to keep the edges firmly in position.

Fixing the Wood edges
The wooden edges or the framework used while pouring the concrete needs to be fixed properly to avoid the concrete from escaping or spilling while being laid out. To get a three inches edging ensure that the tops of the pegs and the concrete path height are same. For this one needs to make sure that the entire path has equal depth. Once the pegs are attached a string line is tightly tied above this which is especially useful for a curved edging. While excavating it would be preferable to dig down till a hardcore base is hit and then concrete poured on this solid base to get a firm layout.

Strengthen the concrete
This stage is important because if concrete is not strengthened the path may appear cracked after a while. A reinforcing mesh is used at the center of the concrete along with control joints to strengthen a weak spot.

Pouring of concrete
For concrete less than seventeen cubic feet, one can mix it oneself in a concrete mixer, and one can get information on the quantity and mix required from the local supplier. One needs to check the weather condition prior to laying out the concrete. It would be best to avoid laying concrete when it is raining and on a hot day it would be better to wet the base before pouring concrete to prevent total drying up at the base.

Public Speaking – Made Easy

Written by admin on April 18, 2008 – 7:34 am -

Do your hands sweat when you stand up in front of people to talk to them? Do you feel like there are a thousand butterflies in your stomach and every thing that you have worked hard to learn has just disappeared from your memory.

Speaking in public can give jitters to anyone who is doing it for the first time. But it is essential to hone up these skills as you may be required to do so at some point of your life. One can easily work to overcome the fear of public speaking and can speak with confidence in any given situation.  Public speaking is something that we normally do at least one time in our lives, even if it is in school. If you are a parent you would be amazed at how many times you will stand up to speak in public. Some people are comfortable with it while others dread it. Here are some ways to make public speaking easier for you.

Time it out. Be it a simple office presentation or a debate or group discussion, it is essential that you time your speech. No one wants to listen to long and boring stuff that keeps going on for what looks like hours. Longer speech also means that your audience may lose interest quickly and your efforts would be worthless. But this does not mean that to keep it within a time, you rush on with your speech. Public speaking is effective when done at an easy pace and in a coherent manner.

Keep it to the point. To make a truly effective speech, do not include worthless information. It would not only make the presentation unnecessarily long, but the focus of the discussion will also be lost. Also, prepare the speech keeping the audience in mind. An office presentation may include a lot of corporate lingo, but the same might not be appropriate for a general audience.

Breaking your speech in smaller chunks is another way of refining the presentation. Use subtitles and smaller phrases wherever possible. This way, not only will you be able to remember many of the points, but your presentation would look more organized. An effective introduction and a good closing statement is must for every discussion.

Always maintain an eye contact. Many people lose out on the opportunity of “communicating” with their audience; they keep on reading papers. Maintaining eye contact at various levels shows that you are thoroughly prepared and it gives an aura of confidence. Include some anecdotes and involve your audience by asking questions. This is particularly helpful when the topic is a complex one. It ensures that you are making your audience understand your points. You can also use Audio-visual material to make your speech more interesting and easy to understand.

Confidence is important for every public speaking activity. If it is your first time or you are nervous, you can practice speaking in front of your mirror. This way you would be able to improve upon any section that needs specific attention. So speak with confidence.

Written by admin on April 11, 2008 – 1:26 am -

You start your day early in the morning and end late at night. You cook, clean, work, drive everyone everywhere. You never get to watch a movie with the family because your too busy cleaning up the kitchen. You have laundry to do and homework to check. If you are sick, it doesn’t matter. You need to get everything done. If you fall behind you spend your day off trying to get caught back up again. You need to find a way that you can deal with the stress in your life.

Don’t you think the word “Stress” has become part of our day-to-day existence? The human race is slowly becoming a victim of Stress. It has moved into our lives through our workplaces, peer pressure, competition in all streams of life, pre and post holiday anxieties, births and deaths in our close associations, starting or ending of a relationship and much more.

Experts have identified two major categories of Stress – Positive and Negative. While Positive Stress is important to enhance self-esteem and motivation levels, Negative Stress should be analyzed and efforts should be made to reduce it. By “Positive Stress” we mean, those Stress levels, wherein, we tend to manage our situations and problems in such a manner that brings about a constructive change in us by boosting up our confidence levels and bringing in a sense of achievement. These outcomes result in personal gratification because of the fact that the problem or situation was met with utmost control and to the best of our abilities irrespective of whether we win or lose during the process. Negative Stress is one’s reaction to a particular situation or environment because of which one undergoes hypertensions, headaches, inability to meet up with deadlines, excessive work or performance pressure and so on.

It is our capability and understanding of situations that results in either Positive or Negative Stress. Basically our reaction to problems, the way we tackle and manage them, determines the level and type of stress. For this reason, experts usually do not talk of eradicating stress but trying to manage it in such a way that we use the same for our self-improvement and development of our personalities.

The key to managing stress lies in identifying the agents causing it, also called “stressors” and trying to reduce them. Some of the simple yet effective methods are - trimming down our emotional reactions to situations; being conscious of the Stress causing agents and understanding the way we react to them; changing the Stress causing environment if need be; controlling our physical responses to Stress; developing our physical reserves; talking about our problems and many more such ways.

We would like to sum up by saying that Stress management is not “rocket science”. Methods of handling Stress are aplenty. The answer lies in creating a win-win situation by managing oneself in the best possible manner and enhancing one’s ability to understand one’s life and environment better.

Next, read these articles on stress relief tips and stress management tips; and soon you will be feeling a whole lot less stressed.
