Unique Flooring – Give Your Flooring A New Look
Written by admin on May 19, 2008 – 6:14 am -There are a number of ways in which one can give a unique look to the floor of the room. People are now tired of the traditional styles of flooring and prefer trying out unique flooring styles to change the look of the room and include more contemporary designs. Some like to use different designs for different rooms such as tiles in the kitchen, carpet flooring in the living room and wooden flooring in the bedroom. This adds variety and tends to give the entire house a stunning appearance.
Unique flooring styles include using tile floors with materials such as ceramic, glass, porcelain, leather, mosaic, metal and terracotta. Metal tiles can be used in the kitchen, basement and bathrooms. These are easy to maintain, durable and are bacteria resistant. One can use mix and match tiles to make the room interesting and area rugs can be used in rooms with metal tiles. They add a customized look to a room and come in a variety of colors, finishes and textures. Leather tiles gives a natural and elegant look to the room as it is made from cowhide. One cannot use leather tiles in areas of high moisture like kitchens and bathrooms as they would get spoiled. Glass tiles are used in commercial buildings and outdoors. They make any room look bright and colorful and require careful handling as they are delicate. Although they are expensive and require professional handling, they are durable and bacteria resistant and they also look very attractive.
Some holiday resorts use unique designs using simple ideas like pebble stones on floors to enhance the flooring design. The design can be made by laying out a stretch of pebbles resembling a stream of water flowing through the tiles. This could be ideally used in beach resorts to give a natural look and holiday feel to the place. With changing trends and better lifestyles people look for alternative methods to make their home or office look unique and different. One can consider aspects such as the area of the room, the traffic flow in the room, the placement of furniture and maintenance required before going in for a change in the pattern of the room and whether an unique flooring would be suitable to include or not. Places of public exposure such as the living room in a house or the lobby in a hotel can include such unique flooring patterns to enhance the appearance of the place.

How To Lay A Concrete Path
Written by admin on April 22, 2008 – 12:08 pm -Here you will find all the tips, tricks and techniques of laying a concrete path. Primarily before laying out a concrete path, one would require materials such as pre-mixed concrete, formwork, nails, screws, and reinforcing mesh and mesh chair supports. The tools required would be hammers, shovel, tape to measure, wheelbarrow, float, concrete edger or jointer and string line. See that this material is kept away from children and always wear safety equipment while working, also seek any prior permission if the concrete layout needs permission prior to starting. The steps to be followed while laying out a concrete are mentioned below.
Preparing the site
Decide the area in which you are planning to lay out the concrete path. If the path is near a lawn area it would be preferable if the height of the concrete is same as the lawn. This not only looks better but is also easier to cut off the edges. Three inches of concrete would be sufficient to give strength to the path. While pouring the concrete decide on the curve of the area, whether it would be straight or curved and pour the concrete accordingly. One can use wood stakes to keep the edges firmly in position.
Fixing the Wood edges
The wooden edges or the framework used while pouring the concrete needs to be fixed properly to avoid the concrete from escaping or spilling while being laid out. To get a three inches edging ensure that the tops of the pegs and the concrete path height are same. For this one needs to make sure that the entire path has equal depth. Once the pegs are attached a string line is tightly tied above this which is especially useful for a curved edging. While excavating it would be preferable to dig down till a hardcore base is hit and then concrete poured on this solid base to get a firm layout.
Strengthen the concrete
This stage is important because if concrete is not strengthened the path may appear cracked after a while. A reinforcing mesh is used at the center of the concrete along with control joints to strengthen a weak spot.
Pouring of concrete
For concrete less than seventeen cubic feet, one can mix it oneself in a concrete mixer, and one can get information on the quantity and mix required from the local supplier. One needs to check the weather condition prior to laying out the concrete. It would be best to avoid laying concrete when it is raining and on a hot day it would be better to wet the base before pouring concrete to prevent total drying up at the base.
